Responsible Tourism Initiatives in Uganda

Description: Welcome to Uganda to explore responsible tourism initiatives! You will spend most of your time In Rwenzori Mountains and Mitandi. Many projects have been set up in the community and visitors are encouraged to take part in the projects or do some voluntary work. Projects are tree planting, setting up library, renovating the clinic and you can even sponsor a child with education. Combined with cultural experience, stunning nature and wonderful people you will get memories for a lifetime.

Day 1: Arrival Uganda and Entebbe.
Responsible Experience in UgandaArrive Entebbe in the evening. You will be met the airport and transported to the hotel, about 45 min. Visa will be bought at the airport. Overnight at a guesthouse near Entebbe.

Day 2: A day with KERWDA.
After breakfast you will be picked up at your guesthouse and transported to Wakiso district outside Entebbe. The day will be spent with KERWDA (Kyadondo East Rural Women Development Association). Visit their office where you will get information about their work and activities that take place. You will visit a farm nearby to take part in the local farming.

Lunch will be served with drummer entertainment. After lunch you will spend time with local artists and learn the Ugandan way of making craft. You will make your own craft. Transportation back to your hotel in Entebbe.

Day 3: Transfer to Mitandi and Rwenzori Mountains (about 5-6t).
Responsible Experience in UgandaAfter breakfast you will be picked up at your hotel for transportation to Mitandi. The journey is an experience in it selves. Look out for goats in the road and Colobus monkeys in the trees? After passing the small town Fort Portal, we take off from the main road and start the slow driving in between the banana trees up to Mitandi.

In the evening gather around the bon fire to hear stories about Mitandi from you hosts Vigdis and Tore.

Day 4: Get to know Mitandi and the projects.
Enjoy a delicious breakfast with porridge oats, fruit and more. After breakfast you will get to know Mitandi and the surrounding area. Visit the school, library, clinic, "eucalyptus-forest", carpentry workshop, village church, the river down the valley and Mabwe village. During the tour you will hear about the projects, places and Mitandi as a community. Meet people that are involved and learn Responsible Experience in Ugandaabout the work that is going on and how it benefits the community. Dinner and overnight at Mitandi Lodge.

Day 5: Get to know Mitandi and the projects.
After breakfast we are invited on homevisit to children and their families who live in the mountains behind Mitandi. It is important to understand how people live in the area. Do you sponsor a child with education through Mitandi sponsorship program? If you are you have the opportunity to visit your child. Lunch will be served at Mitandi Lodge. After lunch there will be time to explore Mitandi area on your own.

After dinner we will have a workshop on responsible tourism in Mitandi. This will be together with the Norwegian hosts and local people that are engaged in the Responsible Experience in Ugandaprojects. Discussion theme will be the projects you have visited. What do you think is good or bad? What can be done differently? Have you any ideas for new projects in the area? Get inspiration and gather thoughts for what can be done in this area, and how tourism can support this work. Dinner and overnight at Mitandi Lodge.

Day 6: Mountain hike to Mt.Karangura (3014m) or shorter ...
After breakfast you will experience the beauty of Rwenzori Mountains. Local guides will join this trip and can tell you what you see and stories about the mountains. The whole trip is about 8 hours. The trip will start early morning to avoid the heat. The speed is slow. On this trip the local guides earn a few dollars to their families. Dinner and overnight at Mitandi Lodge.

Day 7: Optional excursion. Tracking chimpanzees in Kibale Forest.
Early morning travel down the mountains to look for chimpanzees in the Responsible Experience in UgandaKibale - one of Africa's most species-rich forests. This tour supports protection of the few surviving chimpanzees in the area. We recommend this trip. Dinner and overnight at Mitandi Lodge.

Day 8: Excursion to the Westside of Rwenzori Mountains.
After breakfast enjoy a fantastic car journey with panoramic view over semliki on the west side of Rwenzori Mountains. On the other side of the mountains it is thick forest and here you might meet pygmies living in the area. Pygmies are used to tourists, for better or worse - but still it is an experience to get a feel of life in the forest.

Tore and Vigdis will tell you about how tourism contributes to making pygmies to beggars with alcohol problems and failed aid projects to get pygmies to cultivate the earth instead of hunting. Return to Mitandi in the afternoon. Responsible Experience in UgandaDinner and overnight at Mitandi Lodge.

Day 9: Market, Fort Portal.
After breakfast you will got to Fort Portal. Fort Portal is a small town with market, small shops and inspiring crowds of people. Here you will have the chance to support the small scale enterprises in Fort Portal.
African farewell dinner with exotic dishes and grilling will be served in the evening. Overnight at Mitandi.

Day 10: Return to Kampala.
After breakfast transport back to Entebbe (approximately 6-7t) for flight back home. We hope you have had a great stay with memories for life and a learning experience about responsible tourism in Mitandi.
