Description: Transylvania is known for its beautiful scenery, cultural heritage, myths and small villages. This provides the perfect setting for hiking. On this tour we spend one week trekking in three mountains, Piatra Mare Massif, Bucegi Mountains and Piatra Craiului National Park. One of the highlights of the trip is bears watching near Zarnesti. We visit renowned medieval towns such as Brasov and small villages, castles, forts, and of course a visit to Bran Castle (known as Dracula's Castle) is included when in Transylvania. Important: We can not guarantee that we will see animals (bears, deers and wolves) but we guarantee beautiful landscapes.
Day 1: Arrival at Bucharest airport and transfer to Risnov.
We visit Risnov Castle, or Rosenau as it was called by its founders, the Teutonic knights. From
the ramparts we will have spectacular panoramic mountain views to the Bucegi, Postavarul and Piatra
Craiului mountains.We spend 2 nights in Risnov.
Day 2: The Piatra Mare Massif / Brasov. Transfer to Brasov. Hike on the Piatra Mare Massif, through "Seven Ladders" canyon. (Duration: 5-6 hours, medium effort, uphill/downhill walk: 800 m/800 m).
Day 3: The Bucegi Mountains.
Walk in the Bucegi Mountains, with splendid views
to the Craiului Mountains, and then to Moieciu village. Overnight in Moieciu. Overnight at a campsite.
(Duration: 5 - 6 hours, medium effort, uphill/downhill walk: 500 m/500 m).
Day 4: Piatra Craiului (King's Stone) National Park / Pestera village.
From Moieciu we continue on foot to the shepherd village of Fundata village. From here our car will
pick up and we drive to Sirnea, the first touristic village of Romania (30 minutes), followed by a
trekking tour to the bottom of the “Kings stone”, arriving in Pestera village, one of the most
authentic and beautiful mountain village at the bottom of the King's Stone National Park. On our way
we may see orchids, gentians, campanulas and endemic flowers like the Carpathian Iris, scattered
around over beautiful alpine pastures and meadows covered with wildflowers.We will stay two nights in these beautiful surroundings.
(Duration: 5 - 6 hours, easy to medium effort, uphill/downhill walk: 200 m/200 m).
Day 5: Round trip in Piatra Craiului National Park. Today we make a round walk with spectacular views to the Postavarul, Bucegi and Piatra Craiului. On our way we may visit the Pestera Liliecilor (The Bats Cave). (Duration: 4 - 5 hours, easy effort, uphill/downhill walk: 100 m/100 m).
Day 6: Bear Watching in Zarnesti.
Walk to the rustic Curmatura hut into the Piatra Craiului National Park where we may have a drink,
visit to an authentic sheep farm and then walk through the spectacular Prapastiile Zarnestilor gorges
to Zarnesti.
(Duration: 5 - 6 hours, medium effort, uphill/downhill walk: 700 m/700 m).
Zarnesti once was made famous through the “Large Carnivore Project” dealing with the bears,
wolves and lynx in Romania. In the evening we may have our bears watching program (about 4 - 5 hours).
From June to August the probability to see bears are 70-90%. In May, September and October the
probability to see bears are 60 - 70%. There is only one observation point near Brasov: in Piatra
Craiului National Park, 13 km from Zarnesti town, so please send us the reservation in time (2 –
3 months before). Overnight in a welcoming guesthouse in Zarnesti.
Day 7: Bran Castle and Valea Cetatii Cave. Breakfast. Visit to Bran Castle and to the cave nearby the Rasnov Fortress, "VALEA CETATII CAVE". Accommodation.
Day 8: Departure. Transfer to Bucharest airport for departure.
